Middle Schoolers 'Learn & Serve'

Teaching students how to give to their community at a young age is a wonderful thing. At Charlevoix Middle School, students learned to knit hats from 15 loom kits and yarn in a project that will continue all year. The money to purchase these tools came from a Learn & Serve Grant.

"Before Christmas [the students] knitted 31 hats," said teacher Mrs. Gretchen Rice. "We went to the Charlevoix Area Hospital and donated them to the nursery."

Currently, the students are knitting hats to send to Traverse City Munson's oncology unit for adults and aadolescents. While doing this, they aren't forgetting about the Charlevoix babies for whom they are continuing to knit hats for.

This project is very much enjoyed by the students.

"I am incorporating this into my math curriculum, and also using it as a reward for students who get all their work done," said Rice. "They are awarded a few minutes at the end of class to work on their hat."
